FLORIDA:
These buildings are known as “chickees” and are built by the Indians of southern Florida. They provide a maximum amount of ventilation and shade, and minimise thermal mass. The diagonal poles also work well to resist hurricane damage.

COLOMBO, SRI LANKA - THE BRITISH COMMISSION:
The British foreign and commenwealth office decided to build a new high commision in sri Lanka in 2000. The building was located 2 kilometers inland of the diplomatic quarter of the cinnamon gardens. The architects for the project were edinburgh based Richard Murphy and local architect Milroy perera.

They decided that the building should be built on one level and have a series of courtyards rather than different levels. The section should encourage stack ventilation, and introduce natural top lighting. The building has a series of offices, each of which opens into a open top courtyard behind it. Each office is lit indirectly by a curving concrete half vault, this also acts as a solar chimney which encourages stack ventilation to the building. The building itself is cocooned by protective layers of building and courtyard.

The roof is clad in half round clay tiles and are set in projecting eaves, they are then clad in copper and lined with coconut wood. The building fits in well with its surroundings, which is uncommon of buildings with such ventilation systems. The building was completed in 2008 after some delay.
